The
4th commandment
tells us to "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy...... you shall
not do any work ..."
( Exodus 20.: 8-11).
As a lifelong church member
and a retired pastor, I know how difficult it is to re-fraim from doing
any kind of work on Sunday, especially when it comes to church work.
It's tempting to use Sunday morning as a time to touch base
with
fellow committee members, catch up on a meeting we missed, iron out
schedule conflicts, recruit volunteers for a project, etc. Sunday
morning may be the only time we see people face to face and it seems to
make sense to connect with them personally while we can. However
sometimes doing this kind of "work" on Sunday morning distracts from
our own worship experience or that of others. For most of us, worship
time is precious and is compromised when faced with too many
distractions. To avoid "Sunday morning burnout, " we might consider
making appointments for conversations later in the day (or preferably
on another day). We might limit our church-work-related conversations
to a brief minute or two. These are just a few suggestions from a
concerned retired pastor who values Sabbath time.
